Howard Matloff -- 1970 Martin BM-8 (1)
Matloff's left rear wheel broke off and embarked on a potentially
dangerous odyssey. It rolled at a fairly high speed RIGHT AT ME!
I didn't get a picture as it was near the end of the practice session and
I was checking photos.
Still aimed at me, it easily bounced over the tire barrier and landed
on the platform that Speedvision had set up to video the Corkscrew.
If Speedvision's gear had been in place the wheel would have bombed through
it like a cannonball. Then the wheel took a "funny bounce" and aimed
itself away from me; it flew directly at the flagman stationed next to
Speedvision's platform.
Luckily for him, it landed flat rather than on edge, bumping but
not injuring him.
