(7-30-09) From author and photographer Will
Edgar, son of John Edgar:
"The shot of the tail-finned #98 Ferrari is Jack McAfee driving John
Edgar's 857 Sport s/n
0588 M. Pete Woods in the white #700 D-Type led into the first
turn, then Shelby in the #185 410 Speciale passed Woods on the long straight
and held the lead of the 35-lap race the rest of the way to win.
Woods DNF'd when his D-Type's shocks failed on Lap-14. Jack McAfee
finished second in the #98 Edgar-entered 857 Sport. Bill Murphy was
third in his Kurtis-Buick.
This Palm Springs race date was February 26, 1956. McAfee had
been highly touted to win in the #98 car that the press was calling a "Mystery
Ferrari" but Shelby stole the show. Pete Vanlaw was there that day
and Pete probably has some further comments to make about the race.
This was the first race for the Edgar 857 S in the U.S. after being air
freighted from Italy.
The car had previously been refurbished at the factory after Olivier
Gendebien crashed it in practice five months earlier at the RAC Tourist
Trophy on Northern Ireland's TT circuit at Dundrod, when Gendebien was
a rookie third string works driver for Enzo. Gendebien received a
concussion, while the 857 S was badly damaged and sent back to Maranello
for a re-do, then sold to my father, who had thought he was going to get
an 860 Monza instead. The history of 857 S Monza s/n 0588 M is told in
my 7-page article "Sexy Beast" published in the June 2004 issue of FORZA
magazine." |
