(8-9-09) From Andy Dziedzic:
"#135 is Howard Wheeler, who usually had race number #35. Between
1953 and 55 he campaigned his 212 Export Touring Barchetta (s/n
0078 E) with little success at the West Coast. Actually 0078 s a very
important car, owned by Phil Hill, enabled him to take his first chequered
flag in a Ferrari at Torrey Pines 1952. But I'm not sure if these pictures
are taken at Torrey Pines in July 55, because the race numbers are not
matching with the entry list. I'm sure we will find the solution soon."
(8-11-09) From Peter McKercher:
"Re: Chuck Fawcett's photos on Homepage #5 at Torrey Pines:
I believe they are actually from the November 27-28, 1954 Fifth Running
rather than the July 9-10, 1955 event."
(8-23-09) From Andy Dziedzic:
"Howard Wheeler finished in 4th OA/ 1st in class D Modified in the
main modified over 1500cc. Ignazio Lozano with his Kurtis Cadillac
took the checker after 30 laps in 1:11:30.0, followed by Bill Pickford
(Jaguar Special) and Tom Bamford driving his familiar white Allard." |
