Historian Ron Cummings comments
on the article:
"Another amazing story is
the Palm Springs race in the spring of 1960. The photo indicates that Hauser,
in the Larkin-Hauser Special (Old Yeller), was having quite a duel with
Bobby Drake, who was driving Joe Lubin's new Maserati Birdcage. Actually
Hauser just drove away from the whole field. I remember Max driving Old
Yaller II, Jim Hall driving his big 5.7 Maserati, Ron Hissom driving his
Lister-Chevrolet, possibly Hap Sharp driving a Cooper along with all of
the other usual suspects.
Hauser and Old Yeller were
2/3 of a lap ahead of the entire field right up to
the last three laps when
the T-10 transmission packed up giving the T-61 Maserati Birdcage the win.
The week after that race Jim Larkin was testing the car at Riverside when
he got his feet caught in the horribly tight foot pedal area and went end
for end. This resulted in the rollover bar being bent right back on the
rear of the bodywork. Jim was not hurt! Larkin rebuilt the
car, along with his younger brother Michael, and renamed the car the Lioncage." |
