Aston Martin Team
Cars: #18 DP 215 Prototype
From Ed Matsuishi: "In the summer
of 1963 I was in Europe so I went to Le Mans and the Nurburgring F-1 races
as a guest of Phil Hill.
I was a "Go-fer" for him and the team. Most of the photos were taken
in the paddock area during the practice sessions the week before the race.
Phil had left the Ferrari team by then and was driving the Aston
Martin DP 215 at Le Mans with John
Wyer as team manager, and Stirling Moss helping out (he had retired
from racing after his near fatal crash in 1962). Our drivers were
Bruce McLaren/Innes Ireland, Bill Kimberly/Jo Schlesser, and Phil
Hill/Lucien Bianchi. Phil's car #18 was a 4.7 liter and the other
two were 4.5's all long-stroke, dual-cam, straight 6's. None
of them finished."
(1-22-11) From Ed Matsuishi:
"I made an error in describing the cars.
#7 and #8 were DP 214s with 3.7 liter engines. The #18 car that Phil
drove was the DP215 with a 4 liter and slightly lighter." |
