Even our insular little group isn't immune to the tragedies of the larger society.

Homeboy from the old neighborhood Marty Giles was a frequent winner in our bicycle races and was among the Monterey Peninsula's first surfers.

I hadn't seen Marty in years.  I'm glad he made it to the Memorial.

He died shortly afterwards from injuries suffered in a bicycle accident.
