Hill led the race untlil he DNF'd with rear axle failure in his Ferrari 250 MM Vignale Spyder.  His axle failure spilled oil on the track .  The resulting slick took out multiple cars: including brief leader Thornton High in the Mercury-powered Baldwin Special.
