Jim Lawrence -- 1977
Porsche 934/5
Lawrence finished 18th in his 3000cc.
car. Turbo Porsches are a huge favorite of your webmaster's because
of their propensity to shoot live flame out their exhaust pipes on trailing
throttle. Lawrence's car delivered flame reliably -- every
lap!
Your webmaster never knew why these cars
put on such spectacular displays until he created these pages. The
idea is to avoid "turbo lag" by keeping
the turbo "spun up" when engine RPMs drop. Turbocharged
racing cars accomplish this by allowing raw fuel to enter the red-hot exhaust
manifold. Whoomph!!!! The resulting explosion brutally accelerates
the turbo (maintaining boost) and the fire shoots out the exhaust pipe,
delighting the spectators.
