Step on it or get the
hell out of the way! Hansen in #44 with its airbrake-like spoiler
leads a hard driving trio of ace under-two liter drivers around Laguna
Seca's old Turn 7. #33 is Scooter Patrick in a Porsche 906; #16 is
George Follmer in his Lotus Mk.23-Porsche, and car #34 is Ken Miles in
another Porsche 906. This must be the May
8, 1966 USRRC event.
Website visitor Bruce
Dabney identifies #44: "The #44 mystery car is the much-
modified Lotus 19B formerly driven by Jerry Grant. It's shown being
driven by its new owner Jerry Hansen, who at that period painted all his
cars that metallic maroon/brown color. I think he owned this after his
Scarab but before he got the McKee Mk2/Chevette."
From your webmaster:
"Regarding Car #34: Originally identified as Joe Buzzetta, it's actually
Ken Miles who finished 5th o.a. and first Under-two liter in the race.
Follmer was 6th o.a." (Entry
list for 1966 Laguna Seca USRRC) |
This is a very dynamic
racing photo. Hansen looks like he's about to be devoured by the
rapid Porsche-powered trio. Patrick,
Follmer,
and Miles were three of the very best. Follmer
was USRRC champion in 1965 due in part to a very strange point awarding
system used that year; but he won overall at Pensacola and placed well
in other events. |
