Mauna Kea

Larry & I would get away from the work & the rain and explore the variety of landforms on the Big Island.

One day we drove Larry's truck to the top of Mauna Kea.

One of the many observatories atop Mauna Kea.  The altitude and the perfect clarity of the air offer astronomers ideal conditions.

Visible in the background is the summit of the Haleakala volcano on the neighboring island of Maui.

Link to the view back from Haleakala.

A volcanic cone on the peak of Mauna Kea.  Skiing is possible up here sometimes.

Larry on Mauna Kea.

As this picture shows, we're way above treeline.  In fact, I don't think anything grows this high up.

Another "Snow cone" on Mauna Kea.

In the background is the long, gently sloping "shield volcano" Mauna Loa.

The biggest mountain in the world, Mauna Loa is still an active volcano.
