Pearce Woods -- Maserati 450S / John von Neumann -- Ferrari 250TR

John Edgar's Maserati 450S, still with its original engine, was driven by Pearce "Pete" Woods at the June 28-29, 1958 race at Riverside.  Car #11 is John von Neumann's Ferrari 250TR.  Von Neumann dinished 3rd in the race.

The following is from "Motoracing" Volume 3 #19.

Lance Reventlow was the early leader in his Scarab, but suffered rear-end failure and DNF'd after one lap.  The quote below picks up the action following Reventlow's departure:

Did the "Sandy pistons" from Woods' spin lead to the replacement of the Maserati's 4-cam 4.5 liter V8 with a huge, but less sophisticated Pontiac V8?

(3-9-11)   From Willem Oosthoek:

"It looks as though some of the great photos of the 1958 Times GP at Riverside are mixed up with those of the Cal Club event held at Riverside on June 28-29, 1958.

What made me notice was the image of the #98 Maserati 450S- "Pontiac". When Jim Rathmann practiced the Pontiac-engined 450S for the Times GP, it showed eight carburetor stacks protruding out of the hood, shielded upfront by a piece of plastic [probably the small windshield previously used on the car]. This photo shows an unmolested hood, which leads me to believe it was Pearce "Pete" Woods' ride in June, when the car still had its original Maserati engine.

This means that the #11 Ferrari 250TR is not Richie Ginther's, but the car that Johnny von Neumann drove in June. Ginther was in a 860 Monza that weekend.

It also sheds doubt about the caption for Bob Oker's #59 Aston Martin DBR2, which won the Feature race at Riverside in June. My bet is that the DBR2 photos was taken during the Cal Club race."

"Willem -- you're absolutely right, as usual. I'm just now getting around to updating these pages with your corrections."
