Thompson drove this factory-backed Corvette at Pebble Beach on April 22nd, 1956 and almost won the over 1500cc. production race at this prestigious event.   He led the first six laps, then his inadequate brakes faded and Tony Settember took the lead and the win in a Mercedes-Benz 300SL "Gullwing Coupe".

Walt Hansgen was originally slated to drive the car (and was listed in the program as driver), but had other commitments.  John Fitch arranged for Thompson to take over and he proved a good choice.
