Butch Gilbert -- 1959
Hagemann-Sutton Special-Chevrolet
Gilbert,. of Westley, CA, finished
7th in his hybrid car with a fascinating history. It actually started
life as a Talbot-Lago
T26 Grand Prix car, then was separated from its beautiful custom
bodywork when the Talbot chassis was restored to its Grand Prix configuration.
The body was then mounted on a Scarab-like
chassis built by Jack Hage- mann and the car returned to the racing wars.
All to the good -- we get to see this beautiful and interesting Special
out on the racetrack.
Gilbert ran 3rd early in the race, ahead
of Cox's super-hot Ferrari and both Birdcages, but dropped back to 7th
with a mechanical problem.
