Greg Whitten -- 1957
Aston Martin DBR2 / Tom Mittler -- Maserati Type 61
Whitten, of Medina, WA, finished 25th
in his 3700cc.
car. Mittler, of Milwaukee, WI, finished 10th in his "Birdcage".
Two of these large-engined Aston Martin
sports/racers were built, and both were campaigned in the USA after 1958's
three-liter limit made them ineligible for World Manufacturer's Championship
competition. One was raced in east coast events by George
Constantine, while Bob
Oker campaigned the other for Joe Lubin on the west coast.
Mittler is a well-known dealer and collector
who proved his courage at the 2005 Monterey Historics when he took to the
course in the notoriously evil-handling Campbell
Special.
