This photo of McCaw with his arm raised reminds me of a classic b/w photo that ran in Road & Track back in 1960.  That photo showed one of the drivers of the LeMans- winning Olivier Gendebein/ Paul Frere Testa Rossa with his arm raised in a similar fashion.
