The pace lap for the ill-fated first start of the Group 3A race. 

Whitten's relatively low-revving engine saved him from involvement in the incident.  In the astounding, "Better-than-Hollywood" video footage shot from the rollbar camera of David Swig's Monsterati Special (video quickly pulled from YouTube); three high-powered contenders starting at the rear of the field, Morton, Bowman, and Swig, shoot past Whitten.  Then: WHAMMO!  The best special effects guys in Hollywood couldn't match action footage like this. 

Thank God no one was hurt, and that the cars can and will be repaired.
