Riverside:  April 3, 1960

Three legendary West Coast drivers dominated the opening laps of  the "L.A. Examiner Grand Prix ? Herald-Express Grand Prix".

Bill Krause in his #27 Chevy-powered D-Type Jaguar blasted into the lead at the start.

Here he leads Bob Drake and Dan Gurney through Riverside's famed "Esses".

After engine trouble forced Krause out, top qualifier #49 Drake in Joe Lubin's Maserati Type 61 #2452 took the lead

Engine trouble also eliminated him after 25 laps.

Dan Gurney then led in Max Balchowsky's Ol' Yaller Mk.II.  He had qualified 3rd and pro- nounced Ol' Yaller II "The best handling car I've ever driven".

Gurney's ride came to an end on lap 39.  This gave the lead to the cautious Shelby, who babied his Birdcage home for the win.
