(2-16-11) from Davey Jordan:
"The photos of the 275
LM Ferrari spinning in Turn 7 at Riverside was in one of the qualifying
races for the 1965
Times Grand Prix. They had around 100 entries for the race, and decided
to have two qualifying races to decide the starting field for the GP.
I was at the track helping out with Ronnie Bucknm's MK 1 Lola-Ford,
owned by Haskell Wexler. Haskell decided to enter his 275 LM in the GP,
Ronnie suggested that I drive it. The Ferrari was Haskell's street car,
that he drove on a daily basis. I'm sure it was the only car in the race
with a license plate!
I qualified the car in about the middle of the entry list. In my
heat race, towards the end of the race Graham Hill in his McLaren Elva
came up to lap me going into Turn 4, he was leading our heat race. I was
looking in the mirror to try and judge when he would go by,and missed the
apex to Turn 4, ran wide and ran over a tire that was a course marker on
the outside of the track. Hill went past and I continued on with no apparent
damage. I went through Turn 6 without any problem, but when I put on the
brakes for Turn 7 the car did an instant 360, I caught it before it could
go around again and pulled up off the track on the inside of the corner.
The tire I had run over in Turn 4 had damaged the radiator, when
I put the brakes on it dumped the water under my rear wheels and that was
the end of my race weekend. It was really a stupid mistake on my part,
the car was running beautifully and would have run all day without a problem.
With Group 7 race cars being as fragile as they were back then I think
the Ferrari could have finished in the top 10. Haskell sent the car to
Nat the fiberglas man and had it repaired. Last week he told me he sold
it after it was repaired for $26,000. Recently Vintage Race car magazine
estimated a 250 or 275 LM Ferrari would bring $7,000,000. at auction.
On a different note, the MK 1 Lola Ford that was owned by Haskell
and raced by Ronnie Bucknum and myself was just bought by Brian Johnson,
the lead singer for group AC/DC and is being restored by David Henton in
Florida. They hope to have it at Monterey this year." |
