The "Monterey Grand Prix" was a F-5000 race held at Laguna Seca on May 2, 1971.  David Hobbs, Frank Matich, and Brett Lunger finished 1-2-3 in both 40 lap heats and overall.

Gregg Peterson in #86 DNF'd his McLaren after 11 laps in Heat #1; he didn't start Heat 2.  Richard Negley in #17 Lola finished 18th in Heat 1, 19th in Heat 2, for a 19th overall placement. Michael Brockman in his Eagle Mk.5-Chevrolet finished 7th in Heat 1, then DNF'd in Heat two after 10 laps with clutch trouble.  Ron Dykes in #98, a 1600cc. Winkelmann WDB2, finished 21st in Heat 1, but was disqualified adter 1 lap in Heat 2.
