(8-4-09) From Chuck Fawcett:
"The unidentified special at Torrey Pines is the Pickford-Jaguar
Special, probably Bill Pickford at the wheel."
(8-29-11) From Robert Hayes:
IN 1954 I WORKED IN A GARAGE IN CORONADO. CA. I THINK IT WAS
NAMED PRECISION AUTOMOTIVE. IT WAS OWNED BY ROGER POZZI AND JIMMIE WALTNER.
THEY WORKED AT NAS NORTH ISLAND DURING THE DAY AND THE GARAGE AT
NIGHT AND WEEKENDS. I WORKED FULL TIME. WE SPECIALIZED I FOREIGN CARS.
I THINK BILL PICKFORD WORKED IN THE FAMILY OWNED EL CORDOVA HOTEL.
BILL WAS PUTTING TOGETHER THE JAGUAR IN THE PHOTO TO RACE AT TORREY PINES.
I DID NOT DO MUCH ON THE CAR.BILL AND JIMMIE WALTNER DID MOST OF WHAT WAS
DONE. BILL LET ME DRIVE IT AROUND CORONADO ONE DAY. IT WAS AWESOME.
NICK REYNOLDS WAS A BARTENDER AT THE EL CORDOVA. HE WAS WORKING ON
A CROSLEY POWERED SPORTS CAR. HE BROUGHT THE ENGINE TO THE GARAGE AND I
WOULD PUT IT ON THE BENCH AND WORK ON IT. HE BROUGHT QUARTS OF BEER TO
PAY US. THEN HE WENT TO COLLEGE IN SAN FRAN- CISCO AND WAS IN THE KINGSTON
TRIO. HE RACED THE CAR UP THERE. HE WAS NICE ENOUGH TO SEND ME A PHOTO.
I AM SURE THAT THE CAR IN THE PHOTO OF THE JAGUAR IS THE SAME CAR
HE WON THE RACE AT TORREY PINES." |
