Turn 7 Action -- 1961 L.A. Times Grand Prix
Chuck
Daigh in a Scarab-Chevrolet
leads an interesting group through Riverside's Turn 7. Side-by-side
behind Daigh are Bill
Krause in Birdcage Maserati #2452
and Peter
Ryan in a Lotus
Mk.19. Close behind this pair is Roger
Penske in his Cooper Monaco. Bringing up the rear in this fast
company is Scooter
Patrick in the Porsche-powered PAM Special.
Daigh (winner of the 1958
L.A. Times GP in a Scarab) qualified 8th. He ran in fifth position
behind McLaren-Brabham- Hall-Penske until lap 43 when his engine failed.
He'd been running on seven cylinders since lap 10 when a spark plug lead
fell off. Krause (winner of the 1960
L.A. Times GP in another Birdcage) dropped out after 7 laps with a
broken DeDion tube. Ryan was running well until he was black- flagged
for a petty rules infraction: a push start. Penske rocketed through
the field from his 28th starting position to finish 4th. Patrick
DNF'd after a pit stop to replace a flat tire; the Special wouldn't re-start
(and of course he wasn't allowed to push-start the car).
