Thompson qualified 3rd in the Under-two liter class (21st o.a.) at 2:11.4 in Briggs Cunningham's long-tailed LeMans Birdcage and finish 4th Under-two liter (11th o.a.).   The  car was heavy and comparatively slow due to its endurance- race modifications, but was the only Birdcage (out of six starters) to finish the race.

Cunningham and William Kimberley finished 8th in the 1961 LeMans 24 hour race in this car.
