Dan Gurney -- Ferrari 375 MM  (Mistral Body)

Gurney finished 2nd in this re-bodied 375 MM #0362AM.  I was surprised to learn that he drove this car, later Maserati V8-powered, rather than the beautiful (also re-bodied, but this time by the very skilled artist-in-metal Jack Sutton) #0478AM.

3-9-11   From Andy Dziedzic:

"Of course you are right, this is the very sucessful ex-Parravano 375 MM, with which Jack McAfee won nearly every race he started in. 1st OA at Golden Gate, Offutt AFB, 7th and 8th Palm Springs Road Races. On May 1st, 1955 his maroon Ferrari struck a bale and flipped over at Bakersfield.

The car reappeared at Riverside in 1958 with Dan Gurney at the wheel as a member of the Arciero Racing Team. Before Arciero installed a 4.2 litre Maserati Indy engine in this ultra light Mistral bodied Ferrari, the car was most likely fitted with the more powerful 4.9 litre V-12 Ferrari from s/n 0478 AM. Gurney, who drove this car only in this event, managed a very fine 2nd OA only 25 seconds behind Chuck Daigh with his famous Scarab."
