Al Coppel at Torrey Pines -- 1952

From Bill Cleghorn:  "My family was very involved in early post-war Region 33 activities; first, as part of the pit crew and "goings on" of the Alfred Coppel team:  "The Camel Drivers of Outer Mongolia".  Even their racing, taken VERY seriously, had light-hearted social connotations attached.

Al Coppel, a writer of some renown, both then and later, wrote under the nom-de-plume "Chameau Laid" in many of the race programs of the day, and the Camel Drivers had their own pins, badge bar, badges, and flag that was prominently flown in their pits at the races.   The Camel Drivers had their Ladies' Auxilliary: 'The Ladies Mounted'."

(From your webmaster:  Can anyone identify the car, the year, the photographer, or any of the individuals shown here?   TM)

Website visitor Jay Feero identifies Coppel's car:

"Al Coppel's car was an MG TC with an alloy body built by Robert Allenger of San Jose.  Bob was a superb panel beater and car dealer in the 30's thru the late 60's.  Bob built bodies for Indy cars, Bonneville record cars, Midgets, sports cars, and I once watched him make a fender (wing) for an AC Bristol from a sheet of half hard aluminum.  The car had been damaged in transit and was sold. (Bob was a dealer for the make)  In less than ten hours, the old panel was cut off, the new wing formed, gas welded on, and painted.  I do not think the owner was ever aware that the incident had occured!"

Dr. Skivington's grandson Bill Cleghorn on Coppel's car:

"I saw your request for info on the pic of Al Coppel and his car and crew at Torrey Pines (the color pic, actually from the cover of a 50's car magazine).  In that photo, Al Coppel is obviously in the car.  His wife, Liz is standing next to him to the left in the pic. I'm not sure who the guy right behind him is, but there's a good chance it's Bill Harper, one of the pit crew.  Then, the guy next to him, in the red cap, is my father, Bill Cleghorn.  I'm guessing (but fairly certain) that the gal sitting on the bench is Vicki Harper, and my mom, Pat Cleghorn is standing on the bench.  All the pit crew personel are wearing red coveralls. I don't know who the other woman standing on the bench is."
