Torrey Pines 2 -- Ken Miles / Harry Chapman

"Ken Miles exits Turn 1 in Sunday's 1500cc race. He had destroyed a similar car at Turns 4-5, either at this event or a previous one.  John Biehl remembers hearing Josie Von Neumann, who was standing a little too close to the PA system, let go with a string of expletives when it was announced that Miles had overturned one of their cars and her comments were broadcast around the track."

William "Bumpy" Bell was a Tucson auto dealer who sold Lotus cars (before Jay Chamberlain got the West Coast franchise) and also OSCAs.  Here's a brand new OSCA "LeMans" with a 1.5 liter motor, driven by former MG Special driver Harry Chapman.  It's smooth aerodynamic look was a modern step away from the OSCA MT4's that dominated American small modified sports car racing until the emergence of the Porsche 550's and Lotus Mk.9s and Mk.11s. Here driver Chapman exits Turn 3 to head down the short straight to the fast twin Turns 4-5."

"Bumpy's OSCA on the trailer.  I took this pix Saturday morning, January 14, as I wandered around the pit area.  Here the car sits without its numbers, but with two front wire fender- finders.  Whoever owns this car now, please put those back on the car, then contact me and I will trade my Lotus Mk.11 straight across for this car."
