Philippe de Lespinay
-- 1961 Cooper-Climax "Indy"
Philippe de Lespinay's little car precipitated
one of the greatest revolutions in auto racing history. When Jack
Brabham brought the 2750cc. Coventry-Climax powered "Kimberley Cooper"
to Indianapolis Offy-powered dinosaurs like Larry Menser's "Meskowski Special"
ruled the brickyard.
Brabham finished 9th and could have placed
higher with faster pit work. Two years later the Lotus-Fords of Jim
Clark and Dan Gurney frightened the Indy establishment. In 1965,
Jim Clark won easily in a Lotus-Ford and the good old days of "Mercedes
at Tripoli" (in the words of a European observer) at Indy were over.
Here's an apocryphal story on the origins
of the Cooper Indy effort: In 1959, Rodger Ward entered a somewhat
modified Offy midget at the US Grand Prix, held at Sebring that inaugural
year. Ward made the acquaintance of World Champion Jack Brabham,
who had begun his career in Australia driving midgets similar to Ward's
car.
Ward and Brabham got to talking, and
1959 Indy winner Ward planted seeds in Brabham's mind that resulted in
Cooper's Indy effort two years later. True? I don't know. |
