David Love Tribute Page
CSRG founding member member David
Love passed away on Friday, October 4th 2013.
Love began sports car racing as a college
student in Louisiana, then moved to California in 1961. He raced
a Porsche 550 for a year and then bought his now-familiar Ferrari 250TR.
After a year's restoration work, he began racing the car in fender-banging
SCCA events against more modern mid-engined competition.
In 1968 Love and a few friends gathered
at Vaca Valley Raceway for a day of fun racing their 1950s cars.
This small gathering grew into the "Classic Sports Racing Group", now better
known as CSRG. An early competitor was Steve Earle, who went on to
organize the "Monterey Historics" at Laguna Seca. Love won his event
at the first running of the Historics in 1974 and participated every year
until his retirement from racing in 2009. Coming up! April 1-3 2016: The "David Love Memorial" historic racing event.

"I met David Love
at Monterey in 2005 when I was very young. He was a great guy, too! David
was surprised to know that I knew his 250 TR at such a young age. I watched
David race the car, and also went up to Monterey the following year, and
I saw him race. I did not see David until 2009 when he drove in his last
race. Two days before he crashed, he came up to me, and said,"I've been
thinking about you. I've got something for you that I brought to every
race, thinking you would be there.". He did not tell me what it was. Several
months later, I received a large box in the mail from David. Inside was
a black Bell racing helmet with a gold dragon painted on it. It was one
of his old racing helmets. I had no idea he would send me his helmet. What
a guy! I'm going to include a photo of me and David in Monterey, and I
send my condolences to his family." |
