Corvette Sting Ray
Prototype -- Demonstration Laps
Dick
Thompson drove this General
Motors prototype to an 11th place finish in the previous
year's Grand Prix. In 1961 it was a show car.
I remember a hopeful moment when Dave
MacDonald was paged on the PA system: "Dave MacDonald please
go to the GM tent... Dave MacDonald to the GM tent please..."
I was ecstatic! Was Dave MacDonald
going to drive the STING RAY in the big race?
No. What I didn't know as a thirteen-year-old
was that the Sting Ray had already been re-bodied with a heavier shell
for show car duty and was no longer suitable for competition.
