1961 L.A. Times GP -- Pace Lap

The 33 car field rumbles toward Turn 7 behind the Pontiac Grand Prix pace car.  Did Phil Hill drive the pace car?

In the front row we see pole sitter (and race winner) Jack Brabham in Hap Sharp's white 2.75 liter Indy Cooper-engined Cooper Monaco.
In the middle is Stirling Moss in the peas soup-green 2.5 liter Lotus Mk.19.
On the outside of the front row is Bruce McLaren in another 2.75 liter Cooper Monaco.

In the 2nd row are Dan Gurney in the Arciero Bros. Lotus Mk.19 and Jim Hall in his front-engined Chaparral 1-Chevrolet.

Walt Hansgen in #61 Briggs Cunningham's Birdcage Maserati is on the inside of the 3rd row; beside him are two Scarabs, driven by Harry Heuer and Chuck Daigh.

Peter Ryan in his #83 Lotus Mk.19 and Bill Krause in a Birdcage Maserati form the 4th row.
