(7-27-12) From John Kerr:
"This is John Kerr, #32 Miller-Scofield/Ford.
Great series of photos! It backs up my thoughts about what happened.
I was being challenged for position as Bill Lyons and I went through the
Turn 7 complex. I pulled away from Lyons coming out of 7, going into
the "Esses". As we were in Turn 7, I was able to see the 41 car approaching
that turn.
We were at the entrance to the "Esses",
Lyon closed up on me; but, as they are a single line set of turns, he didn't
attempt a pass. I saw a huge splash of red, as the driver of the
41 car filled my mirrors with an attempt to try to get the "line" away
from the both of us. He hit my front wheel with his left wheel.
The impact knocked my car off to the left; as the 41 car spun.
Lyons went through, as did several others,
as I slowed to assess any damage. My car seemed to handle well, so
I finished the race. Later I found the front axle and both spindles
were bent.
It was an unfortunate incident, in that
the 41 car was way ahead of the 2nd place car. The driver was apparently
too impatient to wait for a proper place to pass two cars." |
