(1-5-09) From historian
Ron Cummings:
"The first three photos are from the
L.A. Examiner Grand Prix, held at Pomona on March 8, 1959. Gurney
set the Pomona lap record. He and the Ferrari were the fastest driver/car
combo at the Examiner race. At that time he was only known
to sports car fans and this was a USAC event."
(1-14-09) From German author and
historian Andreas Dziedzic:
"Gurney & the Arciero Ferrari (0478
AM) were a very busy and extremely successful duo. On Sunday March
8, 1959 they started from pole at Pomona, taking the lead only to be stopped
by a sheared cam. The day before they finished in second position in Race
6, a 10 lap show race, won by Bill Krause in a brute 4.5 Maser. Gurney
& the 4.9 Ferrari started at least in 17 races incl. prelims, taking
the chequered flag at Paramount Ranch in November, 1957 and Palm Springs
April, 1958. Their last common appearence had been at Riverside on
October 10, 1959. After a well performed qualifying they dropped out in
a start line melee with Jack Graham's Chevy powered Aston Martin." |
