Larry's Land

My good friend Larry Kraus owned Big Island property in the rain forest high above Keauhou Beach, or "Keauhou Mauka" as they say in Kona.

Larry, a Lifeguard/Cal-Tech mathematician (Not a surprising combination in Southern California beach culture), is an excellent amateur architect.  He was camping on his land and getting ready to build a very interesting house.

The feral Siamese cat was friendly, but noisy.  He was a daily visitor.

Wild pigs also frequented the property, loudly crunching iron-hard Macadamia nuts in their incredibly strong jaws.

Stever "calls home" from deep in Larry's soggy tropical paradise, an overgrown one-time Macadamia nut orchard.

He had to return to the mainland, but I stayed on for several months to enjoy Hawaii and to help Larry start building his "Pagoda-style" pole house.

Home!  Larry's tent provided shelter from unbelievable downpours that happened almost daily.  "Mauka showers" they're called.

A day in the life...

Larry & I would work on the house project in the morning.  At some point between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM the rain would start and we'd head for the beach.

Larry would do something useful & I'd hook up with my Hawaiian drinking buddies.  After a few beers I'd go snorkeling.

Not a bad way to pass the time.
