Jerry Austin -- Corvette / Ron Ellico -- Mercedes-Benz 300-SL  (1)

Sunday "Big Production" winner Ellico in his Mercedes leads Saturday winner Austin and his Corvette past the L.A. County Fairgrounds' signature Ferris Wheel.

I couldn't find anything on Ron Ellico.  Does anyone have any info on him?   Please email me!

(2-28-12)   From Historian Ron Cummings:

"This Pomona race was the very first race weekend for the C S Mead/Bill Thomas
Corvette. This was only two weeks after delivery to Mead's Pasadena dealership. The car was totally stock except for the shortened steering column that Jerry asked for.

Ron Ellico is a member of the Fabulous Fifties. His dad was a Ford dealer in Alhambra, California. Jerry Austin had the lead in the Sunday race when he spun out near the race end. This gave the win to Ellico. That was the last time the C S Mead/Bill Thomas Corvette was beaten by a Gullwing.

Bob Bondurant won something like fifteen races with this Corvette a couple of years later.  This Corvette is still being vintage raced.

Ellico rolled the 300SL at Laguna Seca and traded the wreck to Joe Lubin for Lubin's Formula Two Cooper-Climax. He drove the Cooper a couple of times before putting motorcycle racing hero John McLaughlin in the car."

(2-28-12)   From Aston Martin racer Ron Keil:

"The car was sold in about '66 to Bart Martin, who later sold it to a dear friend of mine (nameless in case he doesn't want the publicity) who still has it today; I've been familiar with the car for well over 50 years as Bart, my other friend and I were all at high school together.  Bob Bondurant has many times offered to buy the car back, but no sale.  Incidentally, it has Zora Arkus-Duntov's signature on the dashboard.  Small world, isn't it?"
