Hi Tam
"Thanks very much for the
picture of the Ferrari.......what a
wonderful car that was too. Drove it from California right into downtown
New York City with my wife and dog in full race tune; no fan, steel and
aluminum clutch, in about '59 or '60........no mufflers ever, of course!
The Aston had a competition
exhaust pipe and we used to carry that in the car with us to the
races, change plugs and
exhaust, race, and drive home ! Again, race tune, no fan, right through
Pasadena before there were freeways !?! Great times!
I only sold both of those
cars because I needed money as the result of an airplane accident, not
from boredom! At one time I had both those cars and the Pierce-Arrow
all parked outside next to my house.Just old cars."
From historian Ron Cummings:
"As I remember there were
two
DB3S Astons raced from Claremont, California, at the same time. Bill,
can you fill us in about the second
Aston? Both cars were ex-Lubin. The history that I have
seen, about the
DB3S's, do not mention the two owner-drivers. Was the second car raced
by a friend of yours?
From Bill de Creeft:
"That was a very good friend
of mine...at that time my best friend; he was killed in a P-51 in about
1970....Keith Hoyt. We both got our cars from Joe Lubin, and his
had the twin plug head and the snorkels in the hood....it obviously had
more power. He had a 300SL and when he saw how much fun I was having he
got the other Aston that Lubin had.
We both raced together first
at Pomona.....Dan Gurney was there and Keith, tongue in cheek, told him
"You better watch out for us , we're pretty hot!" but Dan just grinned.
Keith's tach went out on Sat. and he raced it on Sunday anyway but the
next morning when he went to load it on the trailer the engine blew.
Those are Keith's legs sticking out from behind the left wheel in the Santa
Barbara picture. The name of the fellow sitting in the chair just came
to me
last night...that's Bill
Stoops, who as I remember was a mechanic for Bill Rudd (Bill Rudd Motors)
. Both Bills worked on the Aston and later the Ferrari. I know Ron Keil
has mentioned that no one seems to know where Keith's car ended up.
I don't really know what
became of it......if I knew where it was I wouldn't tell anyone, I'd go
get it! Not to make money, but just to keep! The rumor is it
went to Holland....does that make sense? I don't know the serial
number on it...he didn't drive it on the road as I did mine. Incidently,
the only list of Aston DB3S's I've seen says about #115 "no race history"
which stings a little ! I even got a trophy (third in D modified
) at Santa Barbara that year in that crowd !....and even with Lance Reventlow
shaking his fist at me because I didn't get out of his way fast enough
in the tight esses going by the hangers !?! |
