Jack Brabham -- Cooper Monaco / Bruce McLaren -- Cooper Monaco  (2)

Brabham leads McLaren's tail-finned Cooper out of Riverside's Turn 7.  Tail fins were standard on T61 Coopers, but Hap Sharp didn't like the look and modified the rear end of his #4 car.

In the race, 2nd place qualifier Stirling Moss led the first 27 laps; then  Brabham led for three laps; then McLaren took over for 30 laps while Brabham hung close behind, biding his time.  On the next to last lap, Brabham zoomed past  braking for Turn 9, then built a 12 second lead on the last lap.  McLaren's Cooper had suffered a cracked cylinder head and subsequent water leak.

From "MotoRacing"  Volume 7 #1   (Oct. 27-Nov 3, 1961)

"After McLaren passed Brabham, he was pulling out two seconds on the Australian on the back straight, which might give you an idea of the power of the Indy engine as compared to the spare which was in Brabham's machine."
